Songye style is of cubist proportions and clean lines, a style called Kalebwe. The Songye created a sculptural style of intense dynamism and vitality. The works of Songye craftsmen are often used within the secret societies during various ceremonies. The produced a large number of figures belonging to the fetishist, who manipulates them during the rituals of the full moon. Sculptures like this are known as Nkishi and often serve to divine the future, controle ones destiny and forestall evil-doers or to work magic and most importantly to gain the attention of the spirit world. The figures are used to ensure their success, fertility and wealth and to protect people against hostile forces.
