In Dan society, dangerous immaterial forest spirits are translated into the forms of human face masks. Whether or not they are worn, such sculptures are spiritually charged. Dan masks have been documented as the embodiment of at least a dozen artistic personalities. Masks are the most important artform of the Dan people. The Dan people refer to these masks as gle or ge, terms that refer both to the physical mask and the individual spirits the mask is believed to embody during masquerade performances.
