Product remarks

  • The unique item shown on the image is the exact item you will receive.
  • A doll like this, from the Namji people of north-western Cameroon, is in a highly stylised geometric human form. Its proportionately small head incised with a stark facial expression. The torso is adorned with multiple strings of red and blue beads. With cowrie shells attached to the bead strings. One of the ankles is decorated with multi coloured beads. Dolls such as these were given to young Namji girls as a play thing but also to ready her for a later motherhood role. Caring for such dolls was thought to promote fertility. Often such dolls were worn strapped to the back like a real infant. Once the wish to have a child comes true, these figures are placed on home altars or passed on to the child.
