In African tribal art, the cup-carrying figures are called Mboko. The figure shown is an object linked to the divination rite. A figure like this would be placed next to the diviner during the trance and represented the wife of the spirit who possesses it. You can see light scarification carved on the face and back, and a beautiful representation of the hair. The lid of the item is heavily adorned with patterns, cowrie and two lizard like figures.
