Mangbetu pots are mostly mono-chromatic, made entirely with clay and fired in its natural form. These works show the elaborate reed-reinforced coiffures and elongated heads once common among the Mangbetu, who in the past shaped infants' skulls by gentle pressure. These pots were a short lived production which was fuelled by Mangbetu chiefs and kings who eomplyed local artists to create pieces to be presented as gifts to visitors.
