  • Phemba is the term given to mother and child statues made by the Yombe people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Very interesting wooden figure from a mother and her child. Decorated with a symbolic snake on her head and a monkey is sitting on her shoulder. Phemba are iconic examples of Congo art and reflect the degree to which women are treasured in Congo culture not just for their fecundity but as seers and guardians of the spirit.
