At the end of a trans-Asian cycling journey in the late 80's, Canadian David van der Gulik landed in Indonesia and fell in love with all things made of old wood. After years of sourcing and selling Javanese antiques, he moved into custom furniture design and found a new love in working with the characters and textures of old and antique tropical hardwoods.
Working with his team of local craftsmen at his workshop, David has spent the past twelve years searching for ways to bring new life to old wood. Guided by the principles of organic design, David's style honours the original character of the reclaimed materials, developed after years of exposure to use and elements.
He enjoys juxtaposing masculine and feminine elements within each piece as well as textural contrasts; to offer a tactile as well as visual experience of the piece.
